The Field Engineer reports to the Project Manager.  This hourly position will assist with field support and coordination of job reports, schedules, layout work, coordinate staging materials, and overall completion of construction projects. The Field Engineer will work on-site to review construction, drawings and monitor other documents to confirm accuracy of build.

The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated and have a demonstrated record of performing effectively in a fast-paced environment under changing conditions. In addition, this position must be prepared to travel and work from a client's office, a construction job site or the Decatur home office.  


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Receiving & storing delivered material, equipment and completing all required QC forms
  • Support PMs with executing client goals and act with a sense of urgency in meeting client needs  
  • Support PMs, clients, superintendents and sub-contractors to resolve operational issues and technical issues and other challenges.
  • Assist with field surveying and work plans including elevation, control points and compilation of as-built drawings
  • Assist with calculating material takeoffs from drawings, specifications and other documents
  • Assist with gathering data for submittal, preparing POs, change orders and punch list
  • Research and resolve drawing interpretation problems, conflicts, interferences and inaccuracies     
  • Verify that all completed work complies with Contract Specifications and supporting documents
  • Attend meetings with PMs, SPTS, clients or owners to coordinate construction effort
  • Monitor progress of construction projects, percentage complete when on job site & assist PM w/ monthly updates
  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.


Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytic skills and thorough follow through skills with the ability to meet competing deadlines
  • Must be a strong communicator, presentation skills, detail oriented, and organized
  • Computer skills with an advanced knowledge in developing documents and spreadsheets using Microsoft Office Suite and other software
  • Must be able to self-check own work to ensure accuracy and completeness


Beneficial Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read ISO drawings and shop drawings
  • Must be self-motivated and interested in learning all aspects of construction
  • Must be able to travel to construction job sites in Madison, Morgan and Limestone County; occasionally travel to additional area as needed 


 Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BA or BS degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, or Building Science
  • Some surveying experience,  preferably mechanical construction
  • Must have a working knowledge of Total Station  
  • Must have ability to clear a background check for government projects
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work the hours of the construction field construction projects
  • Climb up and down stairs, ladders, steps and platforms
  • Stoop, kneel, and crouch and crawl
  • Sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time
  • Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and material
  • Lift arms above shoulder level (i.e., throws bags into a truck)
  • Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs
  • See and hear (either naturally or with correction); specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to hear adequately enough to be alerted by horns, sirens, shouting, or any  other noise that is meant to convey a safety warning
  • Must be able to work in confined or enclosed spaces
  • Must be able to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots
  • Must be able to walk moderate distances to reach work area (1/2 mile or more)
  • Must be committed to contributing to a culture of safety, looking out for yourself and others
